The rooms at Kaya Mawa are divided into several categories, each faces the lake and contains a large handcrafted bed and individually designed. All of the rooms have private terraces, the majority with direct access to the water:
Khuyu, Mbungu and Mswkwa – which are found at the bottom of a rocky knoll, with private decks and direct access to the lake.
Ngani, Nkwhazi, Mbamba and Makengulu – which are the premium one bedroom options and are more secluded, either perched higher up with beautiful views and a private pool, or on a private island reached by a bridge, or hidden secretly around the side of the bay.
Madimba House – an ideal option for honeymooners, with sitting rooms, views across the lake, a private infinity pool and found right at the far end of the beach so with complete privacy.
Ulissa and Yofu Houses – both family houses towards the back of the main beach, each with a double and a twin or triple room with and interconnecting bathroom and outdoor chill areas.
Mainja House – a private two-bedroom house with a sitting room and rock plunge pool.
Ndomo Point House – a completely private four-bedroom house, fully self-contained, 1km down the beach, with a pool and private beach and full use of the Kaya Mawa facilities.

Whilst you might assume that there would be very little to do in such a remote destination you would in fact be wrong when it comes to Kaya Mawa. There are a wide range of activities, many of which are included in the cost of your stay, and plenty to explore in the area. The lodge has a fantastic restaurant, although many meals will be served in other fun areas such as the beach, or on the gazebo. The bar is just metres from the water and is the perfect spot to enjoy evening cocktails as you watch the sunset views right down to the south of the lake.

There are numerous activities included in your stay at Kaya Mawa such as mountain biking, snorkelling, kayaking, windsurfing and sailing. At an additional cost there is also wakeboarding, water-skiing, knee-boarding, quad biking and kitesurfing and a PADI Dive Centre on site enabling you to experience some of the best fresh water diving in the world.

Kaya Mawa is an exceptionally romantic destination located on the south-western tip of Likoma Island in the middle of Lake Malawi, not far from Mozambique. Being on Likoma Island is like stepping back in time as it remains mainly untouched since its discovery at the end of the 19th century and is a picturesque haven today. The island is covered with hundreds of baobab trees and has beautiful sandy beaches and rocky coves all around it. There are no hippos so swimming is perfectly safe and you can relax and unwind in peace.

Kaya Mawa is so special because of how individual the lodge is as a whole, and how individual each of the rooms are. They all have quirky, unique touches, some with private pools, others only accessed over a little bridge. There are charming little spots to curl up in and relax everywhere and a stay here really just leaves you with the most wonderful memories as you know you'll never stay somewhere like it again.

To get to Kaya Mawa you need to fly either into Malawi, to Lilongwe Airport, fro where you can take a charter flight to Likoma Island. Alternatively there are also charter flights into Lilongwe from the South Luangwa should you be coming on from a Zambian safari. Please note that the weight allowance on the light aircraft flights from Lilongwe is 15kgs per person and soft bags must be used.

Weather wise Malawi has two seasons broadly speaking. The dry season is from May to November with temperatures around 30 degrees in May and dropping to around 20-25 degrees June to August. September to December it warms up to to around 37 degrees. From December to April is the rainy season although it doesn't tend to rain much during the days although there is of course no guarantee than this. Evening showers cool down the land so that temperatures reach around 30 degrees during the day with medium humidity.

Rates are on a full board basis including all food, accommodation, laundry, transfers to and from the airstrip, snorkelling, mountain biking, kayaking, paddle boarding and sailing. Drinks are not included automatically but a fully inclusive rate is available upon request.
