San Camp is a classically elegant camp, with seven minimalistic yet luxurious white tents standing at the edge of the pans, running almost entirely on solar power to ensure you really get back to nature. Not only is the location utterly unique, the activities here are completely different to those found at the usual safari camps. Here you can meet habituated meerkats, go quad-biking across the salt-pans, head out on game drives searching for desert adapted wildlife, or just unwind in the yoga pavilion enjoying the endless vistas before you.

The camp is made up of a spacious dining tent, which is adjoined, by the library tent and tea tent. The library tent contains an array of ancient artifacts found in the area, a wide range of books and a vintage suitcase bar stocked full of spirits and liqueurs. The tea tent contains comfortable cushions on which guests can relax and enjoy their afternoon tea and coffee as well as a sumptuous spread of cakes and biscuits. Dining in the main mess tent is communal, but should you wish for a private dining experience the camp staff will be more than happy to accommodate you. A short walk from the main mess tent is the open-sided yoga pavilion, the perfect place for unwinding and being at one with your surroundings.

The guest tents are all spread out along the edge of the pans, with the double tents being the furthest away. The furthest tent is about a 5-10 minute walk from the main area. Each of the tents contains either two twin four-poster beds or one large double four-poster. There is seating within the tent and on the veranda and the en-suite bathroom contains a sink, flush loo and shower with hot and cold running water heated by solar power. Camera charging facilities can be found in the main mess tent.

San Camp is set on the edge of the vast Makgadikgadi Salt Pans in north-eastern Botswana. These pans are the only visible remains of an extinct super lake that once covered most of Botswana. The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans are set in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. The camp is reached by charter flight from Maun which takes approximately 1 hour.

San Camp is one of those rare spots that is completely unforgettable to those who have been, and utterly unimaginable to those who have not. Set on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans the camp is unbelievably remote, and whichever way you look there is open space up until the point the land touches the sky. Only open during the winter months from mid-April until October/November, it’s a real desert safari experience. The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans are the remnants of a once vast lake that covered most of Botswana, leaving behind it a mysterious emptiness, romantic in the extreme with its memories of times gone by.

Staying at San Camp or its’ sister camp Jack’s enables you to enjoy things that are so far and away from the norm on an African safari that it’s really a once in a lifetime opportunity. Walking with wild meerkats or learning survival skills from native bushman are experiences that you will never forget, and it doesn’t hurt that you’ll be enjoying them whilst staying at a camp that is one of the most beautiful and romantic in the world.

Daily flights are available from Johannesburg or Maun Airport to the Tsigaro airstrip near San Camp.

There are seven tents, five twin and two double. The beds are all four-poster beds and therefore the twin tents cannot be set up as a double so if you wish for a double tent be sure to confirm that upon reservation.

There is a yoga and meditation pavilion.

San Camp is truly off the grid with no wifi, hairdryers or air-conditioning. Battery charging facilities are available in the mess tent.

There is a complimentary laundry service.

Children of all ages are welcome.

San Camp is only open in the dry season: 16th April - 15th October.
