Bilimungwe Bushcamp is a small and intimate camp, with a charming rustic style that fits in well with it’s surroundings. It was rebuilt entirely in 2011 and it’s chalets are stylish and comfortable, each raised up on wooden decking and with a thatched roof. The four suites are set in the shade of the trees to keep them cool during the summer months, and the rooms themselves are spacious and airy. The foldaway doors of each chalet lead out onto a private deck that looks out over the waterhole in front of camp. This provides a perfect place to sit back, relax and watch the wildlife as you relax between game drives.

The area is particularly famed for it’s bush walks, and the guides at the camp are some of the best to be found. Activities are flexible though and morning and afternoon game drives are on offer, with the afternoon drives going on into the night to give guests the chance to look out for nocturnal wildlife.

Bilimungwe Bushcamp is located in a remote southern section of the South Luangwe National Park. The camp is set in a mahogany grove, overlooking a series of waterholes near the Luangwa River.

Guests fly into Mguwe International Airport and will be met and taken by road to Mfuwe Lodge which is a 45 minute drive. Here you will be given refreshments before travelling on through the South Luangwa National Park to Bilimungwe Bushcamp itself. This part of the journey will be approximately a 2-3hr game drive, depending on what you spot on route. There is also the option to fly in via charter plane to the Kapamba Airstrip which is closer to Bilimungwe Bushcamp.

Bilimungwe is a particularly pretty camp, very traditional in style and with a definite old school charm. The guiding here is excellent and with just four suites you are ensured a really personal experience. The waterhole right in front of camp also means that you're almost guaranteed sensational wildlife viewing whether you're out on a game drive or enjoying a G&T in camp.

Zambia is also the best country in Africa for walking safaris and Bilimungwe Bushcamp and it's sister camps are no exception to this rule. There are six Bushcamp Company camps throughout the South Luangwa Valley, each one intimate and unique in their own way. Several of the camps are walking distance from each other so guests can combine the camps, leaving one in the morning and arriving at the next in time of lunch with their bags already waiting for them in the new room. From Bilimungwe guests can walk to three of it's sister lodges: Chindeni, Kapamba and Zungulila.

Open yearly from May to December.

Children over the age of 12 are welcome at Bilimungwe Camp.

There are 4 open-fronted chalet suites (two double and two twin). Each has indoor and outdoor showers.

The camp runs on solar power and there are battery charging facilities available. Lighting is provided by solar power and paraffin lamps.

The South Luangwa has mild winter days from May to mid-August, with chilly evenings: however from September through to April it is generally quite warm

  • Dry season – May through October

  • Rainy season – November through April

  • Hottest months – October & November (before the rains start around mid-November)
