Casa Malca is a very unique hotel. The owner's love of art has had a huge impact on the design of the property and orginal artworks from Lio Malca's collection are spread around the hotel. The entrance must be one of the most instagrammed spots in Tulum, although only guests staying within the hotel going to get access as security is tight. Casa Malca is the only boutique hotel in Tulum without a name sign outside, instead just a security guard waits with a clipboard and only those fortunate enough to have a reservation are getting in. The doors to the hotel are absolutely enormous, and chairs and a sofa hang down on each side outside. Within the hotel there are countless sculptures and quirky pieces that give it a huge amount of character. The atmosphere is a relaxed one, with hammocks, swings and loungers and a definite barefoot vibe.
The forty-two rooms and suites are modern with lots of grey concrete and huge one-way glass windows. The almost industrial feel to the interiors is balanced out by the colourful artwork and sculptures, and the enormous windows let in lots of light and offer wonderful views. The beachfront rooms cost more than the garden view rooms but the increase in price is worthwhile for the incredible views of palms and ocean before you.
As well as the main restaurant 'Philosophy', which serves a variety of local dishes and international fusion cuisine, there is a roof-top bar with 360 degree views and the perfect spot to watch the sun setting over the jungle.
Casa Malva has three swimming pools, one of which has a subterranean level that is very James Bond worthy. There isn't a spa as such but massages can be arranged within the rooms. Beach pilates and yoga are also offered.
